Thread cutting machines from ProHandling
– the optimal solution for precise & time-saving work

You come from the metal or mechanical engineering industry? And are you looking for a convenient and efficient solution for thread cutting? We will help you! No matter whether you cut threads by hand, with a cordless screwdriver or a column drill – it is usually very exhausting and time-consuming. A speed tap breaks off or the thread is cut obliquely and you can start from the beginning.

Our solution: the tapping machine – also known as tapping machine or tapping arm. We have four different electrical threading machines to choose from as standard. These differ, for example, in the range of the tapping arm, lubrication systems, maximum thread size and depth adjustment.

The advantages of our threading machines

  • Ergonomic operation – The tapping arm is very easy and safe to position, eliminating the need to apply force for tapping.
  • Thread always accurate at 90° – The high manufacturing quality of the tapping machine and the tapping arm within the tapping machine ensures that your thread is always cut perpendicular to the component.
  • Speed – High speed and torque allow the threading machine to cut threads many times faster.
  • No tap breaking – A slipping clutch in the tap holders, which can be adjusted very finely and quickly, ensures that your taps will not break when blind holes occur.
  • Countersinking and helicoils possible – You can clamp your countersinks using a drill chuck holder for the tapping machine; there are also holders for screwing in helicoils/notch cones.

Acquisition of a threading machine

The operation of a threading machine should be as simple as possible. In the case of a current shortage of skilled workers, it is not advisable to choose a highly technical machine for simple tasks which can then only be operated by 1-2 employees throughout the company. Separate forward and reverse flow and separate speed adjustment are important. The speed for threading depends on the thread size. In addition, a simple depth adjustment or a lubrication system may also be suitable.

Handling is one of the most important points. The tapping arm should be easy to move without great resistance. This is important for large threads, because it is ergonomic and energy-saving, but even more important for small threads, because there must be no lateral forces on the cutter, because otherwise it breaks very easily.

At ProHandling you can buy hydraulic and electric threading machines. Mainly, however, the electric tapping machines from the manufacturer Roscamat, since these convince by quality, operability and above all first-class handling.

Differentiation of threading machines

You want to buy a threading machine, but don’t know exactly what you need yet. We will be happy to help you distinguish between the different species.

The advantages of electric threading machines are the infinitely variable speed, it can be used wherever there is a power socket, it is cheap to maintain, quiet, handy and has a low weight. The disadvantage of the electric tapping machine is that it is slightly more expensive than the pneumatic tapping machine, but this is offset by the low maintenance costs.

The advantage of a pneumatic threading machine is usually the favourable purchase price. It is the classic among the aging workshop equipment. Once very popular, today no longer contemporary, as the disadvantages outweigh how: High costs for air, noise, speed not infinitely adjustable.

Advantages of hydraulic threading machines are the infinitely adjustable speeds, a very high torque even at high speeds, it can be used where there is a socket. Disadvantages of hydraulic threading machines are the high purchase and maintenance costs, they are quite loud and not flexible due to the hydraulic power pack.

M30.

What can the threading machines from ProHandling do?

Various gear ratios make it possible to cut large threads with high torque and small threads with high speed. Everything precise and efficient. The depth setting can be used to set the desired depth setting.

The drill chuck holder can easily be clicked into the machine. It can be used for reaming or for drilling small holes. However, it does not replace a drill. A very important benefit is that it can accommodate a countersink. I.e. you can now also lower with your threading machine. The countersinks are always straight. If you have a depth setting on your tapping machine, you can also set how depth is lowered.

The tapping machine can not only be used for drilling, countersinking and tapping. With our tool for screwing in thread inserts, you can very easily and quickly screw in notched cone / Ensat / Helicoils to the desired depth.

The right taps for the ProHandling threading machines

You know the scenario from the production, new order, excellent, but this customer now wants a different material and also that the threads are formed.

Here’s the good news: With our thread cutting arms you can both cut threads and form threads. You can use it to machine standard structural steel, brass and copper as well as very hard metals such as stainless steel.

It is only necessary to ensure that the taps have the DIN371 or DIN376 standard so that they fit into the slipping clutches.

Of course, it is also important to choose the right tap for the intended hole. A distinction is made in this case according to the type of tap, which is available especially for blind holes and also for through holes. The second point to pay attention to is the material of the cutter, if you use a tap designed for steel, for stainless steel, the probability is high that it can break. At Würth, these different taps are marked with coloured rings, for example green for stainless steel and blue for steel.

Tap holders with slipping clutch

Here it’s the same as with the tap. The slipping clutch is a standardized standard product that can be purchased from several manufacturers. You can select the adapter to suit the threading machine.

Information on tap holders with slipping clutch:

We have different standard sizes of tap holders, which you can “click” directly into the cutting head of the tapping machine.

  • Tool holder 19/1 for thread taps Tools from M2-M16
  • Tool holder 31/2 for thread tap Tools from M16-M30
  • Tool holder 48/3 for thread taps Tools from M30-M36

These mounts include an adjustable slipping clutch that skips from a preset torque. This makes tapping into blind holes very easy and protects your tap from breakage.

The nice thing about these couplings is that they can be adjusted according to requirements/ material.

The only important thing is to pay attention to quality. The tap holder is the sensitive point that connects the tapping machine and the tap. It depends on her whether the tap is running straight and she prevents it from breaking off.

We would also be pleased to advise you on this point. After many years of experience, we have identified a manufacturer whose slipping clutches are of very high quality and trigger very sensitively. This is especially important if you want to cut small threads.

Our manufacturer in this area is the company SCM from Italy. They have many years of experience and are specialized in the field of tool holders.

We have brought together the specialists in your fields for you: Threading machine + tap holder with slip clutch + tap + mounting table, all together allow a homogeneous work, the joy ready.

The accessories for the tapping machine, such as tap holders and taps, can be selected at your discretion. However, it is very important to make sure that the accessories are carefully selected and of high quality. A high quality threading machine will not do you any good if you save on accessories.

On what do you mount the threading machine?

Firmly screwed at the workplace

If you want to attach the machine permanently to a workstation intended for you, you can do this with the screws supplied. The height-adjustable foot of the tapping arm has pre-drilled holes. Insert the supplied screws through these holes and tighten from below with the supplied nuts.

Mounted on a column

With the threading machine on one column even more height can be reached and you are unbound from the table/workbench. Only the alignment of the column and workbench is important. Both must be on the same level.

Attachment to magnetic base

A popular variant if you want to cut threads in steel beams or steel constructions. Thread cutting machine with magnetic foot simply place at desired place, tighten and thread cutting. In this case it is only important to make sure that the steel beam or plate is on the same level as the threads. The magnetic foot can also be used on welding tables (such as Siegmund, Demmler). In this case, however, the magnetic effect is less due to the holes in the table.

Information on fixing with a clamp

The clamp resembles a screw clamp and is probably the bestseller among the fastening options. This offers a lot of flexibility, because it is very light and you can fix the machine at almost every workstation. It is inserted into the foot of the tapping arm and tightened from below. This can be done on workbenches, welding tables and e.g. steel girders.

Information about the tapping table

A table for threading offers many advantages. The threading machine can easily be screwed to the table because the holes in the table top are already pre-drilled. A vice can also be screwed to the table top, as there are special fixing slots in the table top for this purpose.

The most important point, however, is that your tapping machine always cuts 100% straight threads, since the tapping machine with articulated arm lies on the same table as the workpiece.

As the table is mobile, it can be used at different workplaces.

You can simply place your thread cutting tools on the shelf.

Another interesting solution is the Siegmund workbench. There you can easily fasten your machine, as well as your components through the clamping system and you have enough storage space. Further information in the blog post.

Automated thread cutting

Thread cutting with a robot, is that possible?

If you want to thread with a robot there are some things to consider. We have tested in many directions during the development period. The result was a threading machine guided by the UR5 robot. The operating system is designed so that it is easy for the end user to operate and no previous knowledge is required. The introduction to the system is provided directly by ProHandling.

When is it worth buying a robot for threading?

It is quite clear that automated threading is a very extensive purchase. Because you need not only the electric threading machine, but also the robot. Companies that frequently have to cut threads in components that are manufactured in series have a particularly clear benefit. In this case, the workpieces to be machined can be pushed under the machine by a conveyor system or laid down by an employee.

Automated threading is a very exciting solution and can save the customer a lot of time and money. That’s why we are happy to advise you and find the right solution for you.

BAER – Our partner in the field of machines Threading taps

The manufacturer of our taps is the German family-owned company BAER and has been involved in thread technology for over 35 years. Our long experience is reflected in the quality and precision of our products, which are manufactured innovatively and progressively using the most modern production facilities. With these taps you benefit from an optimal price-performance ratio. In addition, they are easy to handle and efficient in their applicability.

The UNITap tap, which is suitable for almost all materials and for almost every application, was the result of several years of research. This drill is known for its excellent cutting results. Due to the wide range of possible applications, the work of several drills can otherwise be carried out with one tap. Since only one tool is needed for all applications, the flexibility of the system results in very high cost savings. The tap is characterised by a low torque and a long service life. Possible blockages during drilling are avoided by the ideal guidance of the chip and the over-/ or undercutting of the thread is not possible by the profile change.

When tapping, the first thing that matters is the correct core hole. Time and again we are confronted by customers with the most adventurous calculations for core drilling. The only correct way to calculate the core hole for threads with 60° flank angle (i.e. the metric M and almost all American threads UNC, UNF etc.) is as follows: Take the diameter minus the gradient. For example, an M 6 standard thread (with a pitch of 1.0) has a core hole dimension of 5 mm, whereas the fine thread M 6 x 0.5 requires a core hole of 5.5 mm. The correct core hole dimension is the basic requirement and can also be found in the standards and thread tables.

If the core hole dimension is correct, then the question of the suitable tap arises. There are – as a rule – two basic types of machine taps:

  • Through hole taps – where the resulting chip is challenged in the drilling direction from the through hole.
  • Taps for blind holes – where a twist of the grooves removes the chip in the opposite direction to the drilling.

In addition to these basic types, there are also other gate variants in which the chip is not pressed in one direction and therefore remains in the flutes. These are only conditionally suitable for mechanical use, as the tools have to be freed of chips between operations. If this does not happen, chip clamping may occur, for example, due to chips remaining behind.

Our BAER taps are mainly made of HSSE steels. For special requirements also made of powder metallurgical steel. In order to improve the performance, our tools are partially surface-treated, such as nitrided or provided with a modern hard material coating.

In order to guarantee an optimum service life and thus an economical production, we offer taps according to the materials to be machined. Through adapted geometries, base materials (and partly through coatings), these taps are specifically designed to cut the materials intended for them. Therefore it is an absolute tip to always use the right tap for the material.

Since we were repeatedly confronted in customer contact with the desire to have a tap that could machine almost any material, the BAER research department launched the UniTap. This tap is suitable for use with almost all materials and therefore makes it easy for users who have small batches or who process changing materials. Of course, the service life of the stainless steel UniTaps always remains under a BAER tap that is specially designed for stainless steels, but many customers still appreciate the versatility of the UniTaps.

Another tip that is often neglected in many machining processes, such as thread cutting, is lubrication and cooling. The threading machines from ProHandling can be equipped with a lubrication system. This increases the lifetime of the tools enormously and increases the quality of the cut thread.

What has become more and more important in recent years are threading tools with oversize, since many components are subjected to further processes after machining, such as hardening and galvanizing (or anodizing), the thread in production is already larger to cut. It is very annoying if you have not thought of it before and the threads are no longer suitable after galvanizing. Of course, BAER also supplies taps with special tolerances and oversizes.

Thread forming:BAER thread formers, which are very popular due to their chipless production and process speed, are making an increasingly significant contribution. It is also important to have a certain minimum speed here, since during forming a part of the thread profile is pressed in and another part is poured out. The core hole dimension must be adjusted according to the formability of the material to achieve perfect threads.

Through the cooperation with ProHandling we are proud to be able to offer our quality tools with a partner of quality threading machines. The machines have the appropriate accuracy for concentricity and can be ideally adapted to the application with various setting options for speed and lubrication/cooling.
